Notes: Hand mirror with detachable pewter cover, made in France. Cover contains a profile portrait of Zachary Taylor with an inscription reading "MAJOR GENERAL ZACHARIAH TAYLOR U.S.A." Back of mirror reads "B.C. / 1844 / BREVETTE A PARIS SANS-GARANTIE DU GOUVERT". 1844 date on back would pre-date Taylor's victories in the Mexican War; it may be that the back of the mirror was manufactured before the cover. Item 2214.BB0237 is a similar Taylor mirror issued after his victory in the 1848 elections.
